A committee, appointed by Chief Justice John G. Roberts, has concluded its series of seven hearings which included over 100 hours of testimony from federal defenders, panel attorneys, judges, prosecutors, advocacy groups and academics. This is the first comprehensive look at the federal public defender system in 20 years. The committee will now review all of the information it has received and issue a report and recommendations in April, 2017.  Click here to read the full article...

A free one hour CLE is scheduled for March 30, 2016, at 12 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. in the Cleveland Courthouse-Courtroom 17B (Live), Akron (Jury Assembly Room 578), Toledo (Jury Assembly Room 304) and Youngstown (Jury Assembly Room 345). The speaker is  Abbe Smith, Director, Criminal Defense and Prisoner Advocacy Clinic and Professor of Law at Georgetown Law.  Professor Smith will discuss her book "How Can You Not Defend Those People?"

The Federal Judicial Center has created a reference guide for Judges regarding e-Discovery and the issues that arise with digital discovery in criminal cases. The guide gives the Court suggestions how to ensure that defense counsel has the necessary support for managing e-discovery.  The guide also provides suggestions on holding discovery status hearings and what should be asked of the parties.  Most people now have smart phones which have 30-60+ gigabytes of data, tablets which can have 120+ gigabytes of data, and computers which have hard drives containing terabytes of data storage.
